Have you ever walked into your kitchen and smelled something nasty, but you can’t figure out where it’s coming from? Well one of the most overlooked places in our kitchen is our sinks, their drains, and garbage disposals. We’ve put together some hacks to help youkeep your sink clean and its drain at bay.

Let’s start from the ground up. To clean your drain and clear up any nasty smelling gunk building up, start by pouring a boiling hot pot of water down the drain. Next, take a cup of baking soda and pour it down the drain, followed by two cups of vinegar. Cover the drain for 5-10 mins. To complete the process, pour another pot of boiling water down the drain. The carbon dioxide bubbles and water help add pressure to your drain and free up any gunk. The hot water will help flush any lingering pieces down the drain. 

Now let’s get the bowl of that sink clean. Stainless steel is the most common material for sinks, but it could be tricky to clean. When cleaning, don’t use scouring powders, steel wool, bleach, and ammonia, these can damage the texture and the finish of stainless steel. Just like wood, stainless steel has grain, so use a soft cloth and wipe with the grain in order to prevent streaks. For light cleaning, mild dish detergent and water will do just fine. For harder stains, spray some distilled white vinegar and wipe with the grain. To finish it off you can lightly put olive oil on a cloth and wipe down the surface for a nice shine.

For those of you with garbage disposables a quick, easy tip is pour ice down your drain into the disposal till there’s only enough room for you to cover your drain. When the disposal is full of ice, pour 4 tablespoons worth of dish soap on top of the ice cubes. Cover you drain and turn on your disposal till the ice is gone. This will help clear any build up out and keep your disposal blades sharp!
