Tips For Cleaning a Daycare Properly (Especially during COVID-19)

With everyone returning to work, some parents may be scrambling to find a great daycare. Part of running a great daycare is effective and safe cleaning, even more so now during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve put together some thoughts on cleaning a daycare to maintain a clean and safe environment.

Focus on hot spots such as counters, sinks, and desks. These are all things kids use and touch multiple times a day. These should be cleaned and wiped down several times throughout the day with a child safe cleaner. Some of our favorites are Mrs. Meyer, Giggle, and Dapple. Bathrooms are the biggest hotspot for germs as many daycare aged children are still potty training. To prevent as many germs as possible from making it out of the bathroom, make sure a staff member is there to instruct proper hand washing. If you choose other products make sure to look for non-toxic and hypoallergenic  materials.

Like always, clean from top to bottom. You should clean the tops of your cabinets and light fixtures first so the dust falls on the floor. This allows you to sweep and mop up as much dirt as possible to keep allergies and germs away. Each day, clean all the entryways including light switch, door handles, pens and pencils, cubbies, floors, walls, railings, keyboards, and phones. The diaper changing area is a MUST. This should be disinfected between each diaper change.

Wipe down play area centers, surfaces, and shelves. Some toys should also be wiped clean. Small, durable toys may be dishwasher safe and should go in the dishwasher daily. Washable toys, blankets, and other linens should be washed in the washer daily with proper detergent. If your daycare center uses mats, we recommend spraying them down daily as well.

Additional tips for keeping your daycare center clean and covid free:

  • Vacuum daily

  • Take daily temperatures before allowing children to stay for the day

  • Impliment social distancing when possible

  • Clean the bathroom early in the morning

  • Immediately clean up any spills or accidents

  • Use a hands free trash can in each room

While running a daycare center can be challenging especially with the fear of spreading Covid-19, there are many precautions you can take to ensure the safety of your children. We recommend hiring a professional cleaning service weekly to come in and ensure your space is disinfected from top to bottom.
