Tips For Organizing the Pantry and Cabinets

While the kitchen is typically an area of focus when cleaning your home, keeping the pantry and the kitchen cabinets organized and updated can sometimes be overlooked. The crumbs or food residue on the stove and the dishes in the sink definitely tend to steal the spotlight, but the pantry staying updated, free of expired food, and clutter-free is essential to your kitchen too! We’ve compiled a few tips for keeping your pantry and cabinets part of your cleaning routine.

Throw Out Expired or Opened Food Regularly

See the open bag of chips sitting in the pantry that hasn’t been touched in weeks? Time to throw that out! More times than not, old food that is not currently used or has been forgotten about clutters up our pantry space. It also tricks us from knowing what we need when we go to the grocery store. Food that sits in the pantry too long can also be expired, so get into the habit of routinely checking expiration dates and removing uneaten, open food to make room for fresh additions.

Create an Organized System

Keeping your pantry shelves and your cabinet shelves organized not only allows you to be more efficient when cooking, it also makes it easier for your family and guests to locate snacks and kitchen utensils. Take the time to go through each drawer, cabinet, and sections of the pantry and create a system that works best for your family. Maybe that means all snacks are solely in the pantry, and all dishes, pots, and utensils stay in the cabinets and drawers. If your pantry has shelves, use this to your advantage and assign each shelf its own food group or section. For example- the top of the pantry can be for snacks like chips, dressings, granola bars, and other family favorites. The bottom of the pantry can be for canned goods. This way, if a family pet or unwanted rodent happens to get into the pantry, the perishable snacks are at the top and a bit harder to reach.

There are also kitchen pantry organizers you can purchase to make your system even more flawless.

Store Unused Appliances

That extra can opener or those extra pots that never get used can really get in the way and take up cabinet space. Instead of keeping these in the kitchen and never using them, store them in a tote in the basement or attic. If your can opener breaks or you end up needing the other set of pots, you can easily retrieve and reorganize. You also can buy a rack for the wall and can hang your pots and pans there. This will free up space for other kitchen necessities and ultimately reduce clutter as well!

While we agree that the kitchen appliances, floor, dishes and counters are of major importance when cleaning your home, the cabinets and pantries are also key to keeping your kitchen clean and your cooking sessions smooth.
